Chinese Foreign Ministry spokesperson Guo Jiaqun, while addressing a press conference in Beijing, said that the appointment of Mojtaba Khamenei is an internal matter of Iran. There is no need for anyone to interfere in this. He said that China opposes interference in the internal affairs of other countries under any pretext and calls for respect for Iran’s sovereignty, security and territorial integrity. He also said that the process of nominating Mojtaba as supreme leader was done in accordance with Iran’s constitutional framework.
It is noteworthy that this statement from Beijing has come at a time when US President Donald Trump was demanding American role in electing the new leader of Iran. However, when Mojtaba’s name was announced without any positive reaction from Iran, Trump said that he would not last long. There was also talk of targeting Mojtaba from the Israeli side. Let us tell you, China buys a large part of Iran’s oil exports and has been openly helping Iran.
However, in this war it has only issued statements in favor of Iran. Beijing had earlier described the US-Israeli attacks on Iran as “illegal aggression”, demanded a ceasefire and appealed for restraint in the region. So that its energy interests and Belt and Road Initiative can be protected. China’s support for Iran extends across diplomatic, economic and military-technical levels. At the diplomatic level, Chinese officials such as Foreign Minister Wang Yi and Mao Ning have supported Iran’s sovereignty and maintained contact with the interim leadership to ensure regime continuity.
