New Delhi. The United States of America has officially banned the issuance of immigrant visas to citizens of 75 countries, including Pakistan. In which concerns have been raised about the possible misuse of public welfare benefits. According to a statement issued by the US State Department, the decision is part of a broader policy review ordered by President Donald Trump. Immigrants coming to the United States must be economically self-sufficient and not become a burden on American taxpayers. This policy update, titled Immigrant Visa Processing Update for Countries at High Risk of Utilization of Public Benefits, was last updated on January 14 and will be effective January 21, 2026.

The US State Department said that President Donald Trump has made it clear that immigrants should be economically self-reliant and should not become a financial burden on Americans. Saying that a complete review of existing policies, regulations and guidelines is underway. The State Department is conducting a thorough review of all policies, regulations and guidelines to ensure this, the statement said. Immigrants from these high-risk countries do not access welfare programs in the United States or become a public burden. Under the new directive, the listed countries include – Pakistan, Afghanistan, Bangladesh, Iran, Iraq, Nigeria, Russia, Somalia, Sudan, Syria and Yemen. Immigrant visa applicants can continue to submit applications and attend scheduled visa interviews. However, no immigrant visas will be issued to citizens of these countries during this moratorium. The State Department clarified that this move will not revoke any immigrant visas already issued. He said that matters related to admission in America come under the jurisdiction of the US Department of Homeland Security. The special thing is that this restriction applies only to immigrant visas and will not affect non-immigrant visas including tourist and business visas. Washington’s move was first reported by Fox News, which said it was part of a crackdown on migrants who are likely to face public charges. Public charge is a U.S. immigration standard used to assess whether a noncitizen is likely to be primarily dependent on government benefits, which could affect entry or green card eligibility.
