Alternatives to Qatar ready: America and Australia stand by
Globally, Qatar is a major supplier of LNG, meeting 20% of the world’s demand. Of its total gas imports of 195 MMSCMD, India gets 60 MMSCMD of gas from Qatar. Given the possibility of supply disruption from Qatar, India has urgently started looking for alternative markets.
India’s new gas deal:
- Australia and Canada: These countries have proposed to sell gas to India.
- US and UAE: India has recently signed new agreements with these countries, averting the risk of gas shortage.
Central Government’s three-pronged strategy for energy security
As the threat of war increases, the central government is reviewing the energy situation twice a day. The government has taken the following steps to ensure smooth supply:
1. Gas supply to priority areas: GAIL will declare ‘force majeure’ to ensure uninterrupted gas supply to priority sectors like fertilizers and power generation.
2. Shipping and Insurance: Due to the impact of war on sea transport, the Government of India has been in constant touch with the US for insurance of ships.
3. Global Partnerships: India is in talks with major oil producing countries, the International Energy Agency (IEA) and OPEC to maintain the flow of crude oil and LPG.
Overall, despite the global volatility, it is now clear that the central government’s planning will not end India’s fuel crisis.
