No need to make Virat Kohli captain: Sanjay Manjrekar

In IPL 2025, Virat Kohli has been retained by his franchise Royal Challengers Bangalore by spending a huge amount of Rs 21 crore. After the franchise spent so much money on Virat, it is expected that 'King Kohli' can be seen leading RCB once again in the upcoming season. However, former cricketer and current expert Sanjay Manjrekar is not in favor of it. He says that RCB should not make Kohli the captain again. The former player said that instead of looking at Kohli's height, one should focus on how Kohli has performed with the bat in the last few seasons.

Kohli had won the Orange Cap last season, but also held the record of scoring the slowest century in the history of IPL, off 67 balls. Manjrekar said that Kohli has not performed well enough to be made captain again.

Manjrekar said, “Take out Virat Kohli and his stature from your mind and just look at his performance in the Incredible Premier League, his performance as a batsman and his performance as a captain, and think whether he should be made the captain again.” It is the right decision.”

After releasing Faf du Plessis, Challengers are looking for a new captain. But Manjrekar said Kohli might not be the right choice as he is no longer the T20 cricketer he was a few years ago.

He said, “So, as a T20 player, can Virat Kohli make an impact? Because he is Virat Kohli, 95 percent of the fans want him to become the captain. But if you look at his performance, his contribution has not been that impressive. This is my problem because I don't like to be emotional. I don't want to move away from the truth by doing hero worship like the fans. Virat Kohli is not in form in Test cricket, but India needs him. But in T20, I don't think he is as great a player as he was 7-8 years ago.”

Virat Kohli led RCB for the first time in 2013, after which he left the post in 2021.
