Recently, the government and cyber security agencies have started monitoring calls coming from certain numbers and message People have been advised to be cautious regarding this. Messages sent from these numbers often contain links that contain dangerous malware. As soon as the user clicks on that link, the virus gets installed in the phone and the cyber criminal gets access to the device.
How does this cyber fraud work?
Cyber fraudsters usually use international or virtual numbers. The messages sent from these numbers sometimes promise bank updates, sometimes KYC, and sometimes lottery or prizes. As soon as the user clicks on the link, the virus hidden in his phone becomes active. This virus can access banking apps, UPI apps, passwords and personal information present in the mobile.
Which numbers have been declared dangerous by I4C?
The Indian Cyber Crime Coordination Center (I4C) has recently identified four such numbers from which calls or messages may be indicative of fraud.

This is the ISD code of Pakistan. Cyber criminals use numbers starting with this code to contact them on WhatsApp or other messaging apps. These messages often contain suspicious links, which can hack the phone.

This is a VoIP (Voice over Internet Protocol) number. Such numbers are created through the internet and are very difficult to track. For this reason, cyber criminals use them for fraud.
+86
Many numbers coming from this code are also virtual or internet based. According to I4C, use of these numbers has also been seen in fraud cases.
+880
This is also an Internet generated virtual number, which is used by cyber fraudsters to defraud people.
Why are international numbers more dangerous?
Most international and VoIP numbers cannot be easily tracked within India. Cyber criminals take the help of VPN (Virtual Private Network), due to which their identity remains hidden. This is why it becomes challenging to reach the criminals in cases of fraud committed using such numbers.
How to avoid such fraud
- Ignore calls or messages from any unknown international number.
- Don’t click on any link without checking, no matter how trustworthy the message seems.
- Keep anti-virus and security updates running on your phone.
- Banks or government agencies never send links asking to update information.
- If in doubt, get information by directly visiting the official website of the bank or concerned institution.
What to do when you receive such a call or message?
- If you have also received calls or messages from these numbers, then report them immediately.
- Register a complaint on the Sanchar Sathi portal or app of the Department of Telecommunications.
- Call cyber crime helpline 1930.
- If needed, online complaint can also be filed.
