These farmers will not get the benefit of loan waiver; Will that criterion be a problem?
Shetkari Karjmafi : Maharashtra Chief Minister Devendra Fadnavis announced farmer loan waiver while presenting the state budget yesterday. Under this loan waiver scheme, up to two lakh eligible farmers will be given loan waiver. As the Chief Minister himself announced this in the Legislative Assembly, there is an atmosphere of happiness among the farmers. Now the farmer was happy with the hope that his debt burden would be over. But Devendra Fadnavis has mentioned some sentence while explaining which farmer will get loan waiver, which has made many farmers angry.
According to the information given by the Chief Minister, the overdue loan will be waived (Shetkari Karjmafi) till 30 September 2025. It means that the farmer who was caught in heavy rains, his loan will not be waived. Only those farmers whose loans are overdue till September 30, 2025 will be waived off. Farmers who are in arrears after that will not get the benefit of loan waiver. Also, farmers who regularly repay the loan will also get an incentive of up to Rs. Shetkari Karjmafi
Another thing is that farmers get interest-free crop loans up to three lakh rupees. The interest on these loans is paid by the central and state governments to the banks. Sometimes the banks refinance their old crop loans due to problems faced by the farmers. Many farmers have long-term and medium-term loans along with crop loans. Sometimes their peak loans are paid regularly, but long or medium term loans are overdue. In such a situation, the farmer is not considered as a regular borrower. So even though the government loan waiver is only for crop loans, he does not get a waiver of two lakh rupees.
That is, the farmer does not become a regular borrower and does not get the benefit of the loan waiver scheme because the crop loan is regular but the other loans are overdue.
