There are many historical and famous sites of archaeological importance in Chhattisgarh. One of them is Maheshpur village of Surguja, famous for the world's oldest theater and inscriptions. The coastal area of Ren river near Ramgarh witnessed unprecedented development of art and culture between the 8th century to the 13th century. The remains are spread in Maheshpur and Kalcha-Devgarh in Surguja district. Maheshpur is very important from archaeological point of view due to the number of artefacts and ancient mounds related to Shaiva, Vaishnav and Jainism.

Villagers say that thousands of remains are still buried under the ground, the Archeology Department should conduct excavations here again. The government should pay attention to preserve this heritage and increase the tourism potential in Surguja.
