Another significant step towards modernization is about to be added to India’s railway network. The country’s first Vande Bharat Sleeper Train is set to enter service on January 17, 2026. Prime Minister Narendra Modi will flag off this historic initiative. The event will be held at Malda Town Railway Station in West Bengal. This project is considered a major step by Indian Railways towards modernizing the country’s rail system.
After the inauguration, starting January 18, the train will run regularly from Howrah in West Bengal to the Kamakhya region in Assam, further improving connectivity with Northeast India. The Kamakhya region is located near the city of Kamakhya and is considered a vital route for travelers.
Until now, the Vande Bharat train has been available only in a chair car model. However, given the need for overnight comfort during long-distance travel, the Railways have introduced a sleeper version. This will provide passengers with a comfortable travel experience at high speed. This train will be especially useful for those who prefer to travel long distances at night.
The train’s interior has been designed with modern and attractive features. Modern toilets with sensor-based taps have been installed. Advanced technology has been used for cleaning. Higher-quality berths have been designed to provide comfortable sleeping conditions for passengers. Disinfection technology has also been incorporated into the train coaches to maintain improved hygiene standards.
The train features different classes of coaches. In addition to sleeper coaches, AC First Class, AC Second Class, and AC Third Class will be available, providing options for passengers with different budgets and needs.
For safety, the train is equipped with the Kavach Automatic Train Protection System, which helps prevent accidents. It also features an emergency talk-back unit, a modern braking system, and an advanced driver control system. Automatic doors enhance both passenger safety and convenience.
The train’s interior design is inspired by Indian culture, while the exterior is aerodynamic to ensure balance and stability even at high speeds.
In addition to the train launch, the Prime Minister’s visit is also linked to development projects. He will participate in various programs in West Bengal and Assam on January 17 and 18.
