Russian Oil Controversy Political turmoil has erupted after US Treasury Secretary Scott Besant’s comment on giving India permission to buy Russian oil for 30 days. The opposition is attacking the Modi government at the Center regarding this and is raising the question that who is America to tell from whom India will buy oil and from whom it will not. Meanwhile, Leader of Opposition in Lok Sabha Rahul Gandhi has raised questions on the current foreign policy.

Congress MP Rahul Gandhi said in an ex-post on Friday that the policy that is visible now is not India’s foreign policy. This is the result of exploitation by a compromised person. He wrote, ‘India’s foreign policy is shaped by the combined wishes of our people. It must be rooted in our history, our geography and our spiritual values based on truth and non-violence. What we are seeing today is not policy. This is the result of exploitation by a compromised person.
US Treasury Secretary’s statement
Earlier, US Treasury Secretary Scott Besant announced exemption for India to buy Russian oil on ex post. Scott Besant wrote on X, ‘Due to President Trump’s energy agenda, oil and gas production has reached its highest level ever. To keep oil flowing into global markets, the Treasury Department is granting a temporary 30-day waiver to allow Indian refiners to buy Russian oil. “This deliberate short-term approach will not provide any significant financial benefit to the Russian government because it only allows transactions that involve oil already trapped in the ocean.”
The US Treasury Secretary further wrote, ‘India is an important partner of the United States, and we fully expect New Delhi to increase its purchases of US oil. This workaround will reduce the pressure created by Iran’s attempt to hold global energy hostage. Let us tell you that during the trade deal with India, America had said that if India buys oil from Russia again, then 25 percent tariff will be imposed on it again. Regarding which Congress had taken the government to task.
