News India Live, Digital Desk: Prime Minister Narendra Modi today dedicated to the nation another ‘Emergency Landing Field’ (ELF), giving new heights to connectivity and security in the border areas of the country. On this occasion, the PM stressed that modern India no longer just waits for disasters, but prepares a ‘strategic framework’ in advance to deal with them.
What is an emergency landing strip and why is it important?
It is a specially designed stretch of highway that can be used for landing and take-off of Indian Air Force (IAF) fighter aircraft in case of war or emergency.
Second circle of security: If the enemy targets our main airbase during the war, these highway runways act as ‘backup’ for the Air Force.
quick auction: With these strips in the border areas, troops and supplies can be transported to the front in a very short time.
dual use: On normal days, this stretch is open to the general public as a national highway, but if needed, it can be converted into a runway in a few minutes.
Key Highlights of PM Modi’s address
Self-reliant India: The PM said that these projects have been built by Indian companies, which shows the resolve for ‘self-reliant defence’.
Proof of Security: “The country has not just got another landing strip, but it is a proof of how serious and prepared India is to protect its borders.”
Combination of development and defence: He told how infrastructure development is now being done keeping in mind the economic progress as well as national security.
Indian Air Force’s ‘show of strength’
During the inauguration, state-of-the-art fighter aircraft like Sukhoi-30 and Jaguar conducted touch-and-go exercises on the strip. It has become one of the few highways in India where the Air Force is able to land its aircraft.
