Spreading fake news and rumours
Forwarding messages on WhatsApp is quite common, but it can cause problems if the message contains rumours, hate speech or misinformation. In India, spreading false or fake news is a punishable offense under the IT Act and various sections of the Indian Penal Code. If your forwarded message hurts someone’s sentiments, incites a riot or tarnishes someone’s image, the police can take action against you. In many cases, people have even been arrested for simply forwarding the message.
Sending offensive photos and videos
Some people send obscene, offensive or sensitive photos and videos on WhatsApp just as a joke. However, this is a cyber crime. Sending private content without permission, sharing photos and videos with the intention of defaming someone or spreading obscene content are all serious offences. Under Section 67 of the IT Act, this can lead to imprisonment and a hefty fine.

Sending threatening messages
If someone uses WhatsApp to threaten or blackmail someone, it is punishable under several sections of the Indian Penal Code. Sometimes, people send such messages to another person out of anger, but the consequences can be very serious. Any threatening, violent or defamatory message may lead to a police complaint.
