This year was full of difficulties. How lack of trust and bitterness in statements changed India-Bangladesh relations.

News India Live, Digital Desk: It is said that you can change your friends, but not your neighbours. For India and Bangladesh, the year 2025 stood the test of this proverb. The year 2025 has added bitterness to the neighbor with whom we had blood relations and memories dating back to 1971, which hardly anyone had imagined. If we look at the account of this entire year, we understand that things did not deteriorate suddenly, but the lack of trust added fuel to the fire. The change that changed everything. The roots of this bitterness were laid in the last months of the year 2024, but its full impact was felt in 2025. The inclination and ideology of the new interim government that was formed after the departure of Sheikh Hasina’s government always remained a question for India. Delhi, which was once the safest destination for Dhaka, is now being distanced from the same Delhi. The spontaneity in relations was gone and was replaced by formal coldness. Public anger and ‘India Out’ The most sad aspect of 2025 was the growing ‘anti-India’ sentiment among the general public. The way the ‘India Out’ campaign was run on social media not only hurt business but also attacked decades-old cultural bonds. It was painful for common Indians to see that slogans were being raised against them in the streets of the country for which their elders had sacrificed their lives. Security of Minorities: The Biggest Headache The Hindu and other minority communities living in Bangladesh remained the center of concern of the Indian media and government throughout the year. The news of violence and fear coming from there made the public in India very restless. Although the interim government of Bangladesh kept giving repeated assurances, the ground reality and increasing radicalization on the streets of Dhaka exposed these claims. Cases like the arrest of Chinmoy Krishna Das only fueled the fire. Trade and Visa: Where the common man is in trouble Not only in politics, but also in terms of business, 2025 proved to be a bad year. Strict visa rules from the Indian side and increased import restrictions from the Bangladesh side led to lines of trucks at the border. Lakhs of Bangladeshi patients coming from India for treatment got caught in this political tussle. This rift in trade relations has given wounds to the economy of both the countries which will take time to heal. Increasing strictness on the border and crisis of trust, there is no softness like before between BSF and Bangladesh security forces. There were more reports of minor skirmishes in 2025 than before. The fear of cross-border infiltration and allegations of espionage have created a wall of suspicion even among security agencies. What next? Will the situation change in 2026? As we bid farewell to 2025, the question remains whether all this was just a bad phase or a permanent distance? Experts believe that improving relations with Bangladesh is no longer just a task of ‘diplomacy’, but winning the trust of the people there is a big challenge. This rift in relations shows that when politics and emotions collide, the common people who live on both sides of the border are always the losers. The year 2026 is an opportunity for both India and Bangladesh to shed the burden of the past and move forward together, because no matter what kind of neighbor it is, its own well-being lies in its peace.
