Tamil Nadu Assembly Elections: An important turning point has come in the politics of Tamil Nadu. Viduthalai Chiruthigal Katchi President Thol Thirumavalavan has announced not to contest from Kattumannarkoil seat in the 2026 Tamil Nadu Assembly elections. His decision has put an end to the ongoing speculations regarding his election prospects.
Thirumavalavan said that he had earlier expressed his desire to raise the voice of the deprived communities in the Assembly, but keeping in mind the current political situation and the strategy of the alliance, he decided to step back. He told that he has completed two years as an MP and going to the Assembly and becoming the voice of the oppressed classes was a part of his long-term thinking.
Public interest always takes priority
Referring to his political journey, Thol Thirumavalavan said that his decisions have always been in the public interest and not on the basis of personal ambition. He reminded that he left the post in 2004 and stepped back in 2006 to give opportunity to others. Thirumavalavan clarified that none of his decisions were taken keeping in mind the race for the post of Deputy Chief Minister or the situation of the hung assembly. He says that his opponents are spreading such things against him so that his image is tarnished and the alliance appears weak.
Denial of DMK pressure
Thol Thirumavalavan rejected any possibility of pressure from DMK. He said that seat sharing decisions are taken on the basis of principles of social justice and party strategy. He announced that Jyothimani, the younger son of former leader Ilaiyaperumal, would be fielded as the party’s candidate from the Kattumannarkoil seat. He denied any differences of opinion in the party and said that all decisions have been taken with transparency.
Big statement on 2026 assembly elections
Thol Thirumavalavan described the upcoming 2026 assembly elections as a decisive battle against right-wing forces in Tamil Nadu. He said his main aim was to ensure the victory of the DMK-led alliance. Thirumavalavan is confident that this alliance will return to power by winning more than 200 seats.
He said that he never entered politics for position or power. According to him, his past sacrifices for the party are the biggest proof that his aim is only public interest and social justice.
New candidate in Kattumannarkoil
After the withdrawal of Thirumavalavan, the party has fielded Jyothimani from Kattumannarkoil seat. This decision has been taken on the basis of party strategy and principles of social justice. Thirumavalavan insisted that there were no differences of any kind in the party and all decisions were taken with complete transparency and consensus.
