Thousands of frozen durians have been sold for the first time through a TikTok live stream, a brand-new way to distribute the fruit in Vietnam.

The live stream Wednesday, which targeted mostly customers in Hanoi, was organized jointly by the government, TikTok, delivery firm Viettel Post, and fruit distributor Chanh Thu, Your Three newspaper reported.

A five-kilogram box containing two durians was priced at VND900,000, but customers could buy it at discounts of up to 36%.

The durians belonged to Vietnam’s Ri6 variety and were guaranteed to meet export standards.

Chanh Thu sent 1,670 boxes to a storage in Hanoi for the live stream, Nguyen Khanh Toan, a government relations officer at TikTok Vietnam, said.

“We want to sell one million frozen durians this year through live streams to customers nationwide.”

Ngo Tuong Vy, deputy CEO of Chanh Thu, said selling durian is easier frozen than fresh since the latter should be delivered from farm to consumers within 10 days. But frozen durian can be preserved for up to two years and keeps 95% of its flavor, he added.

In Hanoi, Viettel Post offered buyers of the fruit free delivery within two hours.

Nguyen Minh Tien, director of the Ministry of Agriculture and Rural Development’s Agricultural Trade Promotion Center, told HCMC Law newspaper that the live stream was the first step in selling frozen durians on a large scale, including exporting to China.

“We can sell frozen durians to China by hiring Chinese live-streamers to work on social media platforms.”

It could pave the way for other frozen fruits to be exported the same way, he added.
