  • The ministry has constituted a five-member committee to investigate rigging in the elections, which the BCB has sought to end, considering it an attack on its autonomy.

Administrative crisis in Bangladesh cricket

New Delhi: The Bangladesh Cricket Board (BCB) is currently facing a serious administrative crisis, where a clash is being seen between the board and the sports ministry. The ministry has constituted an inquiry committee due to allegations of rigging and abuse of power in the board elections held last year. BCB is extremely dissatisfied with this decision and has warned the government that it may have serious consequences at the international level. The board believes that this government interference is a violation of the rules of the International Cricket Council (ICC), due to which Bangladesh cricket may also be banned.

Formation of inquiry committee

The ministry has formed a five-member committee to investigate the alleged irregularities in the elections. This committee is going to submit its report in the next 15 working days from March 11. The main objective of this investigation is to clarify the veracity of the allegations of abuse of power and election rigging. BCB says that it is an independent democratic institution and such an investigation raises questions on its autonomy. The board has demanded immediate abolition of this inquiry committee.

ICC’s strict rules

According to BCB, the matter has been discussed with International Cricket Council officials. The ICC does not tolerate government interference and can ban teams if rules are violated. Earlier, countries like Zimbabwe and Sri Lanka have faced suspension for the same reason. The board says it wants to communicate with local sports councils before filing a complaint with the ICC so that the stability of cricket is not threatened.

Tamim Iqbal’s serious allegations

The roots of this controversy lie in the allegations of former captain Tamim Iqbal. He has accused Board Chairman Aminul Islam of interfering in the election process. According to Tamim, Aminul wrote a letter to the ministry and got the counselors of some districts changed and the dates of nomination extended repeatedly. However, Aminul has rejected all these allegations. This difference of opinion among the players puts a question mark on the electoral credibility of the board.

post election situation

The situation has not returned to normal after the elections held in October. Several groups and club officials accused officials of ‘engineering’ the election process. The situation worsened when a newly elected director had to step down after his controversial political connections went viral on social media. Ultimately Tamim Iqbal also withdrew his candidature. These incidents proved that despite winning the elections, all is not well within the board.
