Three men face charges for beating deliveryman to death over $15 package

Hoa Vang District Police announced Thursday that Tran Van Minh Toan and Nguyen Thanh Tung, both 26, and Tran Hoang Thien, 19, are under probe for charges of “deliberate infliction of bodily harm upon another person” under the Penal Code.

The men, all local residents, are accused of using weapons and physical violence to assault 31-year-old delivery worker Tran Thanh, resulting in his death. The suspects have confessed to the crime.

The investigation revealed that Tran Thanh Thao, 26, a resident of Hoa Vang, ordered goods worth VND375,000 ($14.97) on Jan. 17, including floor cleaner, a mat, and wet wipes, through an e-commerce platform. Thanh delivered the order to Thao’s home that afternoon, where her father, Tran Hiep, 49, accepted it on her behalf. Thao told Thanh she would pay via bank transfer.

After providing his account details but not receiving payment, Thanh repeatedly called Thao on the phone, but she did not answer. Later in the afternoon, Thao called Thanh, leading to a disagreement. Upset by Thanh’s attitude, Thao filed a complaint with the delivery company.

Around 11 p.m., after drinking alcohol, Thanh, frustrated about the complaint, went to Thao’s house to confront her. Thao was not home, and her father advised Thanh to leave as he appeared intoxicated. While Thanh was still at the gate, Thao arrived home with Toan and Tung after attending a party. A verbal argument broke out between Thanh and Thao.

During the confrontation, Toan and Tung attacked Thanh, striking him on the head and body. Five minutes later, Thao’s younger brother, ‘Thien, arrived after being informed of the altercation and hit Thanh with a helmet.

Hiep, the father, eventually intervened, and Thanh left on his motorbike to return home. However, around 0:30 a.m. the next day, Thanh’s wife noticed he was struggling to breathe and called for help. He died shortly after.

Later that night, Hoa Vang District Police summoned those involved and arrested Toan, Tung, and Thien. Relatives of Thao reported that the three suspects had consumed alcohol before the incident. Authorities are continuing to investigate the case.
