3 slums near PM residence will be removed, ultimatum to vacate by March 6; 717 families will be shifted
The work of removing three slums built on Race Course Road near Prime Minister Narendra Modi’s residence in New Delhi has started. Taking steps towards slum clearance, the Central government on Thursday started issuing rehabilitation notices to residents. In this notice they have been asked to vacate the place by March 6. In the notice, slum dwellers have been asked to take possession of the allotted flat in DUSIB Colony located at Savda Ghevar.
According to sources, residents of Bhai Ram Camp, Masjid Camp and DID Camp located on Race Course Road have been asked to either vacate the place or face legal action. This notice was issued by the Land and Development Office (L&DO) of the Ministry of Housing and Urban Affairs (MoHUA) on Thursday.
Flats allotted to slum dwellers
The Indian Express has a copy of this notice, according to which these three slum (JJ) clusters are located on government land under the Land and Development Office (L&DO). According to sources, a total of 717 families have been allotted flats in Savda Ghevar.
The distance of these slums is just a few kilometers from the Prime Minister’s residence 7, Lok Kalyan Marg. The New Delhi Municipal Council (NDMC) had renamed Race Course Road as Lok Kalyan Marg in 2016. But the address of the slums in L&DO records is still Race Code Road.
The notice further said that the joint survey was conducted by L&DO and Delhi Development Authority (DDA) in January 2024 under the rehabilitation policy of Delhi Urban Shelter Improvement Board (DUSIB). So that it can be assessed whether residents are eligible for alternative accommodation or not. After this it was decided that the residents of these three clusters would be rehabilitated in DUSIB Colony located at Savda Ghewar. This place is about 45 kilometers from here.
Rehabilitation notice issued
All residents were issued a rehabilitation notice on October 29, 2025, which was challenged in the Delhi High Court in November. In its order dated November 13, 2025, the court sought a response from the government and said, “In the meantime, the petitioners will not be evicted without adhering to the procedural safeguards…”. The next hearing took place on January 13 in which the government sought four weeks’ additional time to file its reply. The court ordered the case to be listed on May 13. And directed that the interim order of November 13 will remain in effect till then.
People living around the Red Fort in Delhi have still not forgotten the blast that took place near the metro station in November. 15 people lost their lives in this blast. On Tuesday evening, the police team patrolling in the same area became alert when they saw two people sitting in a car with J&K number in the ‘Dilli Chalo’ park behind the Red Fort.
