TikTok Super App Strategy: For hotel booking and fintech…
TikTok is often seen as a large social media platform, but now it is slowly expanding beyond just being a video sharing app. With time, many new features have been added to it including TikTok Shop, map feature to find local places, better search facility, games.
TikTok in India: Global social media platform TikTok is rapidly evolving beyond a traditional video-sharing app to a broader digital ecosystem. Inspired by China’s super app model WeChat, the company is now integrating many features like e-commerce, travel, gaming and financial services into its platform. Although this app is banned in India since 2020, its expansion and new features globally are keeping it in constant discussion.
TikTok expands towards super app model
The purpose of TikTok is no longer limited to entertainment only. The company wants to establish itself as a “super app” where users can fulfill multiple digital needs on a single platform. Like WeChat, this model is working towards giving users convenience from watching videos to payments, shopping and services in a single app. Experts believe that this strategy can bring a big change in the global tech industry.
New features are being added to TikTok
Over the past few years, TikTok has added many new features to its platform, taking it towards making it a multi-functional app.
1. TikTok Shop and e-commerce expansion
TikTok has launched its e-commerce feature TikTok Shop in several countries, allowing creators and brands to sell products directly through the platform. This feature bridges the gap between social media and online shopping.
2. Hotel Booking and Travel Services
Recently the company has launched the facility to search and book hotels under a feature called “TikTok Go”. The service allows users to fulfill their travel needs right within the app.
3. Sports and Events Hub
TikTok has also launched special hubs for big sporting events, such as the FIFA World Cup content hub, where users can view live scores, schedules, highlights, and trending videos.
4. Gaming and Entertainment
Gaming features are also gradually being added to the app, allowing users to enjoy interactive games along with watching videos.
5. Fintech and Digital Payments
According to reports, TikTok has applied for fintech services and payment licenses in several countries. Its aim is to include services like loans, digital wallets and payment systems in the platform.
Strategy inspired by WeChat model
In China, WeChat is a super app that combines messaging, social media, payments, shopping and even government services into a single platform. TikTok is also trying to adopt this model globally. The company aims to enable users to complete most of their digital activities in one place without having to switch between different apps. According to experts, this strategy is extremely important to increase user engagement and strengthen TikTok’s role in the digital economy.
Global expansion, but uncertainty over return to India
Even though TikTok is becoming a more technologically advanced and multi-purpose platform, its return to India still remains uncertain. The Indian government banned TikTok in 2020 due to national security and data privacy concerns. This decision was not taken due to lack of any feature but for data security and geopolitical reasons.
TikTok’s parent company ByteDance is based in China, and that is why there are still many regulatory and political hurdles regarding its possible return to India.
