Timo Werner given official RB Leipzig farewell against Wolfsburg

Timo Werner was given an official farewell by RB Leipzig ahead of their 2-2 draw at home to Wolfsburg on Sunday, with the forward having completed a move to MLS side San José Earthquakes.

Werner’s transfer to the MLS was confirmed at the end of January, and although he struggled for game time in Leipzig this season, the 29-year-old remains a fan favourite at the Red Bull Arena, thanks in large part to scoring 113 goals in 216 competitive outings for the club across two separate spells.

Before Sunday’s game, an emotional Werner was welcomed onto the pitch by sporting director Marcel Schäfer and managing director Johann Plenge, who presented him with an enormous poster featuring some of his best moments in a Leipzig shirt, accompanied with the words: “Danke Timo”.

Werner, who has recently become a father, then took to the microphone himself, telling the spectators: “My daughter was born on Wednesday and I don’t think she could be any prouder to be from Leipzig. Thank you very much and all the best for the future. Once Leipzig, always Leipzig.”

Werner is the second Leipzig player this season to be given a fitting send-off in front of a home crowd in honour of his achievements, after Kevin Kampl bade farewell to the club in January following the mutual termination of his contract.

Ole Werner’s side currently sit fifth in the Bundesliga standings after Sunday’s draw with Wolfsburg – a game in which they twice came from behind to claim a share of the spoils.
