Names of TMC candidates revealed for Rajya Sabha, these are the four candidates including Babul Supriyo
Political activities have intensified in West Bengal regarding the upcoming Rajya Sabha elections. The ruling Trinamool Congress (TMC) has declared the names of its candidates for four out of five seats. This time the party has tried to give a balanced message by removing faces from both political and cultural fields.
Opportunity for Babul Supriyo and Koel Mallik
The most popular name in TMC’s list is that of Babul Supriyo. Babul, who was a former Union Minister, is now active in state politics and the decision to send him to Rajya Sabha is being considered as a strategic move of the party.
Along with this, popular Bengali cinema actress Koyal Mallik has also been made a candidate. It is believed that this step has been taken in the direction of giving representation to the personalities associated with the cultural world on the national stage.
Bet on administrative and legal experience also
The party has also fielded former DGP Rajiv Kumar and senior lawyer Maneka Guruswamy as candidates. Rajiv Kumar’s administrative experience and understanding of law and order can prove useful for the party in Parliament. Whereas the name of Maneka Guruswamy shows a strong hold on constitutional and legal issues.
Through these four names, TMC has tried to ensure representation of all four fields: politics, cinema, administration and law.
What does the mathematics of five seats say?
Elections are to be held for a total of five Rajya Sabha seats in the state. Voting is proposed on March 16 for 37 seats in 10 states of the country, which also includes five seats in West Bengal.
TMC has 223 to 225 MLAs in the assembly, which gives it enough numbers to win four seats. On the other hand, Bharatiya Janata Party (BJP) has 64-65 MLAs. To win one seat of Rajya Sabha, 49 votes are required, in such a situation it is considered almost certain that BJP will win one seat.
striving for strategic balance
Political analysts believe that TMC has selected the candidates thoughtfully. On one hand, the party is trying to woo its old allies, while on the other hand, it is also preparing the ground for future politics by bringing forward new faces.
Now all eyes are on voting on March 16, where it will be decided who gets the five Rajya Sabha seats from West Bengal.
