On this, Parliamentary Affairs Minister Kiren Rijiju targeted the Trinamool Congress and said that the Election Commission is a constitutional body and the government has nothing to do with its decisions. He said that the Election Commission has been empowered in the Constitution and there is no point in raising its decision in the House. He said that raising such issues is a misuse of the House’s time.
Chief Secretary removed
He said that constitutional institutions should be respected but Trinamool Congress and Congress Party keep attacking constitutional bodies. Let us tell you that just a few hours after the announcement of the West Bengal Assembly election schedule, the Election Commission had removed two top officials of the Mamata Banerjee government from their posts, including Chief Secretary Nandini Chakraborty.
The commission appointed 1993 batch Indian Administrative Service (IAS) officer Dushyant Nariyala as the state chief secretary and said Nandini Chakraborty would be kept away from election-related work. The commission also removed West Bengal Home Secretary Jagdish Prasad Meena from his post. In a letter sent to the state government on Sunday night, the Commission directed to appoint 1997 batch IAS officer Sanghamitra Ghosh as Principal Secretary of Home and Hill Affairs.

According to the letter signed by Commission Secretary Sujit Kumar Mishra, the officers who have been transferred will not be posted on any election related post till the elections are over. The commission said the decision was taken after reviewing the election preparations in the state. The Commission said that the instructions should be implemented with immediate effect and the compliance report regarding the appointment of officers should be sent by 3 pm on Monday.
This administrative reshuffle in West Bengal came in the wake of the Mamata Banerjee-led Trinamool Congress government’s continuous criticism of the Commission over the Special Intensive Revision (SIR) exercise of the electoral rolls conducted in the state. Some sections of political circles in the state believe that this step has been taken to ensure administrative fairness during the elections. Voting for the assembly elections in the state will be held in two phases on April 23 and 29 and counting of votes will take place on May 4.
