TMKOC Dayaben Return: Veteran actor Sharad Sankla, best known for playing the character of Abdul in the long-running TV show Taarak Mehta Ka Ooltah Chashmah, recently talked about his journey, struggles and the much-awaited comeback of Daya Ben. The actor appeared on the podcast ‘The Awara Musafir’, where he opened up about his career, his tough times in the industry and his relationship with producer Asit Kumar Modi. Sharad also recalled the time when he was unemployed for almost seven years and described that period as his ‘Saade Sati’ period.

Talking about producer Asit Modi, Sharad said, “As everyone knows, Asit Kumar Modi is my friend. We worked together in the first show of Neela Tele Films. In a way, I was his lucky charm because I was the first actor to work under his production banner, which is considered an auspicious beginning. That’s why he always considers me lucky.”

He further added, “When Taarak Mehta Ka Ooltah Chashmah started, I had not worked for about seven to eight years. I don’t know why, but either I was not getting work or I was going through financial difficulties.”

Talking about his struggling phase, Sharad said, “At that time, there was no work at all. As I said, we mostly got small roles like the hero’s friend. That was the trend in the industry at that time. Later, the trend changed and the hero himself started doing comedy and carrying the entire film on his shoulders.”

He further said, “Senior actors like Ashwini ji were very active at that time and were getting work continuously. Therefore, turning down roles was not an option for me. Whatever work was available, I had to do it.”

‘The era of Johnny Lever and Rajpal Yadav reduced our chances’

Sharad also talked about how the rise of big comedy stars affected character actors. “From the 1990s to the early 2000s, Johnny Lever was seen in almost every film. Later, when people saw Johnny Bhai on screen, they used to say that Rajpal Yadav has arrived. Rajpal Yadav became very popular, and such actors started getting big comic roles. Because of this, people like us got less opportunities. I really think that was a very difficult period in my life – you can say that I Was going through Sati.” He ended by saying that in the end it was Sunny Deol who gave him work and helped him get back on track.

Will Daya Ben return to TMKOC? Sharad Sankla replied

Answering the biggest question – will Daya Ben return? Sharad said, “I don’t think it’s possible now, but at the same time, you can’t say anything for sure. Maybe, maybe not.”

He further added, “Our producers never want any actor to leave the show. Daya left the show eight years ago, and yet the show is still running successfully. Even after eight years, people watch the show and keep missing Daya. This clearly shows how much the audience loves her.

Just as the audience is waiting for him, similarly Asit Kumar Modi is also waiting.” Sharad further added, “If she comes back, it would be great. “And if she doesn’t come, we will find some other way to move forward.”
