TN focuses on developing only Kadalur and Udangudi ports, says Captain M. Anbarasan- The Week

“Tamil Nadu is uniquely positioned with both an east and west coast, making it a critical area for maritime development,” said Captain M. Anbarasan, state port officer, Tamil Nadu, at THE WEEK Maritime Conclave in Chennai. The state’s coastline stretches approximately 1,076 kilometers, dotted with around 400 fishing villages.

“This proximity to fishing communities present challenges for land acquisition required for new port developments. Recognizing these challenges, Tamil Nadu’s government has focused on developing only two new ports: one on the east coast at Kadalur and another near Udangudi in the south,” said Anbarasan.

Anbarasan noted that the Kadalur Port, strategically located between Chennai and Karaikal, is poised for significant development. Covering an area of 1,200 acres, this Greenfield port aims to enhance cargo handling capabilities while minimizing environmental disruption. The port’s location benefits from proximity to critical infrastructure such as the upcoming East Coast Road and rail links that facilitate efficient transportation of goods. The Udangudi Trestle Jetty is another significant project nearing completion in the state. This unique jetty extends approximately 8 kilometers into the sea and is designed to accommodate large vessels without requiring extensive dredging. With a natural depth of 19 meters, the jetty will support coal imports for nearby power plants once operational by mid-2025.

Anbarasan noted that to bolster regional trade, Tamil Nadu is investing in robust road and rail connectivity. The state is developing multiple industrial corridors that connect major ports with inland areas.

In line with global sustainability trends, Tamil Nadu’s government has introduced a state port development policy aimed at promoting green initiatives within its maritime sector. New ports will incorporate green energy solutions, while existing facilities will transition to sustainable practices over time.

The development of fishing harbors is another critical initiative aimed at supporting local fishermen’s livelihoods. Anbarasan talked about government plans to upgrade existing facilities while establishing new fishing harbors equipped with fish processing units, cold storage facilities, net mending sheds, and boat manufacturing capabilities.

Recognizing the importance of skilled labor in the maritime sector, Tamil Nadu has established itself as a hub for maritime education. Anbarasan noted that the Indian Maritime University in Chennai serves as a premier institution for maritime studies, alongside various private academies offering specialized training programs.
