To hide the death of their son, the family created an AI clone of his son, talks to his 80-year-old mother on video call daily
New Delhi . An emotional and shocking case has come to light in China’s Shandong province, where a family used Artificial Intelligence (AI) to hide the death of their son from his elderly mother. According to the information, the only son of the family had died in a road accident last year. His mother is over 80 years old and is suffering from a serious heart condition. The family feared that hearing the news of their son’s death could have a serious impact on their health.
Digital ‘son’ created from photo, video and voice
The family sought the help of AI expert Zhang Zewei, who lives in Jiangsu province. He provided his son’s old photographs, videos, audio recordings and samples of local dialect. With the help of this data, an AI avatar was created which looks exactly like the real son in appearance, speech and behavior. It has been told that this digital avatar talks like his son by bowing and also repeats his conversation style exactly.
Mother talks to ‘son’ every day
Now this AI avatar talks to her mother through video call every day. The elderly mother thinks that her son is working in another city. The mother often asks her son about his well-being and asks him to come home. In response, the AI ’son’ says that he is busy with work and will return home soon to fulfill his responsibilities. He also advises the mother to take care of herself.
Emotional relief or moral questions?
While on one hand this case reflects the advancement of technology and human sensitivities, on the other hand it also raises many moral questions. Is it right to maintain communication through AI by hiding the truth of a loved one’s death? The family says that their only aim is to maintain the mother’s emotional and physical health, but what will be the consequences when the truth comes out in the future remains a big question.
