Valmiki Jayanti 2024 Date: Valmiki Jayanti is celebrated every year on the full moon date of Ashwin month. This year Valmiki Jayanti is being celebrated on this day. Sage Valmiki composed the epic Ramayana. On the auspicious occasion of Valmiki Jayanti, tableaus are taken out at various places. According to religious beliefs, earlier Valmiki ji was a dacoit and used to feed himself and his family by robbing the people coming to the forest.

Valmiki ji received the title of Maharishi due to his scholarship and penance. He composed Ramayana, one of the most important epics of Hinduism. Besides, he is also known as the first poet of Sanskrit i.e. the first poet of Sanskrit language.

The full moon date of Ashvim month is starting on 16th October at 08:40 pm. This date will end on October 17 at 04:55 pm. In such a situation, Valmiki Jayanti will be celebrated on Thursday, 17 October.

How did the name Valmiki come about?

According to the legend, earlier Valmiki's name used to be Ratnakar. He was a dacoit and used to support his family by robbing the people who came to the forest. Then once he tried to rob Narada Muni who had come to the forest. But the teachings given by Narad ji changed his heart and he performed severe penance to seek forgiveness from his father. He became so engrossed in penance that ants formed anthills all over his body, due to which he became Valmiki.

This type of composition of Ramayana

There is also a story related to the composition of the epic Ramayana, according to which, Maharishi Valmiki had composed Ramayana at the behest of Lord Brahma. According to the story, Valmiki ji cursed a hunter who killed the Kraunch bird, but during this suddenly a verse was composed from his mouth.

Then Lord Brahma appeared and said that it was because of my inspiration that such words came out of your mouth. Therefore, you should compose the complete character of Lord Shri Ram in the form of verses. In this way Maharishi Valmiki had composed the epic Ramayana.
