India’s gold imports rose 34 percent year-on-year to $3.41 billion in May. In the same period, the import of silver decreased by 86.65 percent. The government has increased the import duty on precious metals from 6 percent to 15 percent with effect from May 13. According to Commerce Ministry data, silver imports declined to $75.5 million during the period compared to $566.2 million in May last year.

The country’s trade deficit widened to $28.21 billion in May due to a surge in gold imports. Gold rates (including all taxes) in the national capital hovered around Rs 1,60,000 per 10 grams, while silver rates remained around Rs 2,60,000 per kg. Switzerland is the largest source of gold imports, accounting for nearly 40 percent. It is followed by the United Arab Emirates (over 16 percent) and South Africa (around 10 percent). Gold imports from Switzerland fell by 57.73 percent in May, compared to 20.34 percent in the first two months of FY 2026-27.
