Japan’s Tokyo ranked 10th in a list of world’s 50 best cities this year as voted by British magazine Time Out, trailing behind other Asian tourism hubs such as Shanghai, Bangkok and Seoul.
Tokyo scored particularly well among its Gen Z inhabitants, with 91% of under-30s saying their city makes them happy and 82% saying that people there seem positive.
Tokyo is home to the world’s coolest neighbourhood, Jimbocho. It has more Michelin-starred restaurants than any other city, and has just opened the first-ever permanent open-air Pokémon theme park.
To identify the places that residents say are the most exciting places to visit right now, Time Out surveyed more than 24,000 residents across 150 cities, asking residents questions in 42 languages.
Participants were asked about dozens of factors shaping urban life, including food, nightlife, culture, affordability, happiness, community and overall city vibe.
The results were combined with insights from Time Out‘s global network of more than 100 city experts, creating a ranking designed to capture the places that locals say offer the best urban experiences today.
Melbourne in Australia has been named the best city in the world, followed by China’s Shanghai.
Thailand’s Bangkok, a popular tourism hub in Southeast Asia, ranked 8th.
South Korea’s Seoul ranked 9th.
