Toll Rules: From today, ‘these’ vehicles will have to pay 4 times more toll

Toll Rules | A major change has come in for motorists traveling on national highways across the country. The central government has implemented new toll rules to take strict action against overloading vehicles. As per these rules which came into effect from 15 April 2026, overloaded vehicles will now have to pay double to quadruple the toll. The main objective of this decision is to increase road safety, reduce the number of accidents and prevent damage to highways.

What are the new rules?

The structure of toll penalty under the new system is clearly defined. Accordingly, if the vehicle has an excess weight of up to 10 percent over the prescribed capacity, no additional charges will be levied. 10% to 40% excess load will be charged twice the original toll and most importantly vehicles carrying more than 40% load will be charged 4 times the original toll. One of the most important changes in these new rules is digital enforcement. The weight of the vehicle will be measured at the toll plaza and if the vehicle is found to be overloaded, the fine will be deducted directly from the FASTag account. Modern ‘weigh-in-motion’ (WIM) technology will enable vehicle weighing while it is in motion, saving time and transparency in the process.

The government has installed certified way-bridges (weigh forks) at many toll plazas. Through it the total weight of the vehicle (including cargo) will be measured. It will be compared with the permissible weight (Gross Vehicle Weight). If found overloaded, penalty will be applied immediately. However, where the way-bridge is not available or not functioning at the toll plaza, no penalty will be levied for excess load. In such cases only regular (standard) toll charges will be applicable. These rules will be particularly applicable for vehicles using FASTag and will be important for commercial vehicles plying on national highways. According to officials, overloaded vehicles deteriorate roads quickly, increase the risk of accidents and reduce traffic safety. Hence it became necessary to control through strict penalties and digital system.
