NHAI is seen taking rapid steps towards fully digitizing the toll collection system across the country. Recently, NHAI has made several changes in the toll system, which will come into effect from April 10. Henceforth, tolls cannot be paid in cash on national highways; Instead, toll payments will be accepted only through ‘FASTag’ and ‘UPI’. The main objective of this initiative is to reduce the long queues of vehicles at toll plazas and save time for commuters. Although the toll payment has been done through FASTag earlier, the current decision to completely stop cash payment mode is considered as a logical and next step in this direction.

If not FASTag then pay higher toll
Under this new arrangement, digital options like FASTag and UPI will be the only acceptable modes of toll payment; Cash payments will no longer be allowed and FASTag will be primarily preferred in toll transactions.
For vehicles not fitted with FASTag, toll can be paid through UPI; However, such transactions will be charged at 1.25 times (half times) the normal toll charges. The system is expected to make the toll collection process faster and more streamlined, as well as more transparent.
Stricter rules for concessions
As per the new rules, the toll exemption will now be granted only to vehicles that have a valid FASTag or annual pass authorized for the exemption. The practice of evading tolls by just showing ID card while traveling will now be discontinued; Moreover, it will now be mandatory to carry ‘Savalat Pass’ even for entry into government vehicles. Without such a pass the vehicle will be denied entry; Because earlier it was noticed that many persons were misusing government identity cards to get toll concessions for their personal activities and evaded tolls causing great hardship to other commuters.

An annual pass is beneficial for those who travel a lot
For drivers who travel frequently, an annual toll pass is considered a great option. This pass eliminates the need to pay toll every time or recharge frequently. Toll concession can be availed multiple times in a year by paying once. However, the price of this annual pass has been increased recently.
From April 1, 2026, the cost of this pass has been increased from Rs 3000 to Rs 3075. About 200 journeys are provided in a year under this pass. This pass is more convenient and economical for drivers who travel on the highway every day. So this option can be a cost saver and time saver for regular travelers.
