Tommy Paul wins US Men’s Clay Court Championship title, defeats Roman Andres Buruchaga in the final
Tommy Paul beats Roman Burruchaga: America’s star tennis player Tommy Paul has won the US Men’s Clay Court Championship title by defeating Argentina’s Roman Andres Buruchaga. Tommy Paul defeated Roman Andres Burruchaga 6–1, 3–6, 7–5 to win his first US Men’s Clay Championships title. This is his fifth ATP Tour title, and his first on clay. Paul, 28, saved three match points at the championship on Sunday, winning four consecutive games from 3-5 down in the third set to clinch the title.
Paul sealed his fifth consecutive American championship in Houston with his two-hour, 40-minute victory. After Paul surged ahead in the opening set, Burruchaga responded more strongly in the second set, racking up points and finding his rhythm on returns to seal the match. The third set was the real test of his courage. Trailing 5-3, Paul was down three match points and just minutes away from defeat. After Buruchaga made two errors in the first two sets, Paul found the net with a touch volley winner to stay on.

Paul then took a 6–5 lead, but Burruchaga came back and almost forced a tiebreaker in the third set. The Argentinian served out 40-0, but Paul held his ground point-by-point and overcame his opponent to win the final set 7-5.

With this win, 28-year-old Paul also became the oldest tennis player to win the clay championship title in Houston since 32-year-old Juan Monaco in 2016. At the same time, with this victory, Tommy Paul joined Francis Tiafoe as the two active American players to win titles on clay, grass and hard courts. He is now the American Tour leader in match wins with 2026 matches, with a 19-7 record this year.

Paul will return to the top 20 for the first time since last October, and is expected to rise to No. 18 in next week’s ATP rankings. Meanwhile, Buruchaga will reach a new career high of No. 62 after breaking into the top 100 for the first time in February and entering the tournament at No. 77.
