If you have bad breath for a long time, a feeling of something being stuck in your throat, or frequent discomfort in your throat, then you may be suffering from a stone problem in your throat. In medical language it is called Tonsil Stones. Like the common stone problem, you do not feel severe pain in this, but you always feel that the throat is not clear or something is stuck.

Know the problem of tonsil stones

Tonsil is a part of our throat, which is towards the back. It is also considered an important part of the body’s immune system. These work to prevent germs from entering the body.

When dirt starts accumulating in the small pits and cracks on the surface of the tonsils, over time it can harden and turn into small white or yellow stone-like structures. These are called tonsil stones or tonsilloliths. Tonsil stones are not dangerous, but they can often cause problems like bad breath, difficulty in swallowing food, stinging sensation in the throat or frequent infections.

Why does this problem occur?

Dr. Prabhakar Mishra of the ENT department in a private hospital in Delhi told that there are naturally small pits or crypts on the surface of the tonsils. When microscopic particles of food, dead cells, mucus and bacteria accumulate in these crypts, they can gradually harden and take the form of stones.

The biggest reason for the formation of tonsil stones is its structure, people who have deep pits in their tonsils are more likely to get stuck in food and other particles. When these substances remain stored there for a long time, bacteria start growing in them and gradually they harden and take the form of stones. This problem is seen more in people who have frequent tonsillitis. Apart from this, if your oral hygiene is also not good then you can keep falling victim to this problem again and again.

How to know if you too have this problem?

Doctors say that tonsil stones can be a major reason for bad breath. You may see these white or yellow stones sticking out in the back of the throat. The bacteria present inside the stone produce sulfur-containing compounds, which cause odor. There may also be a sensation of something stuck in the throat, pain or discomfort while swallowing, a prickling sensation in the throat, and frequent coughing. The nerves of the throat and ear are connected, so some people may feel pain in the ear due to infection.

How to prevent tonsil stones?

To prevent tonsil stones, it is considered most important to take care of good oral hygiene. It is important for you to brush and tongue at least twice a day. Gargling with lukewarm water keeps the surface of the tonsils clean and trapped particles can come out. It is also important to drink plenty of water. Dryness of mouth promotes bacteria. Limiting smoking and sugary beverages can reduce the risk of infection and stones. People who frequently suffer from tonsillitis should take treatment as per doctor’s advice as repeated infections can increase the risk of tonsil stones.
