IMD warns of heavy rain, flash floods across J&K
The India Meteorological Department (IMD) on Sunday forecast widespread light to moderate rainfall accompanied by thunderstorms across Jammu and Kashmir over the next 24 hours, while warning of the possibility of flash floods, landslides, mudslides, and shooting stones in vulnerable areas.
According to the Meteorological Centre Srinagar’s seven-day weather bulletin issued at 11 am on July 12, widespread rainfall is expected across both the Kashmir and Jammu divisions on Sunday. Thereafter, scattered light to moderate rain and thundershowers are likely across the Union Territory over the following week.
The weather office has issued an impact-based warning for Sunday, predicting isolated thunderstorms, lightning, and gusty winds of 40–50 kmph, with gusts reaching up to 60 kmph across both divisions. It said vulnerable areas may witness landslides, mudslides, flash floods, and shooting stones due to the adverse weather conditions. While no major warning has been issued for Kashmir beyond Sunday, isolated thunderstorms accompanied by gusty winds are expected to continue across the Jammu division during the coming week.
The IMD has advised residents, pilgrims, and tourists to remain cautious, particularly in landslide-prone areas and along mountain roads, as heavy rainfall could temporarily disrupt traffic and increase the risk of localised flooding.
During the past 24 hours, the Union Territory witnessed fairly widespread light to moderate rainfall, with Pahalgam recording the highest precipitation at 42.6 mm. Among other stations, Gulmarg received 11.8 mm, while Srinagar recorded no rainfall during the period. The highest rainfall among automatic weather stations was recorded at Chandanwari (Anantnag), which received 38.5 mm.
Day temperatures remained 3–4 degrees Celsius above normal across most parts of the Kashmir division, while they were up to 5 degrees below normal at many places in the Jammu division. Qazigund recorded the highest maximum temperature in Kashmir at 30.6°C, while Jammu city recorded 34.4°C.
Night temperatures remained 1–2 degrees above normal at many places in Kashmir and near normal across the Jammu division. Gulmarg was the coldest place in Kashmir at 11.0°C, while Bhadarwah recorded the lowest minimum temperature in the Jammu division at 17.4°C.
For Monday, the weather department has forecast partly to generally cloudy skies over Srinagar, with temperatures likely to hover around 30°C and 19°C. Jammu is expected to witness generally cloudy skies with light rain and thundershowers, with temperatures around 34°C and 23°C.
