TRAI New Rule: In today’s digital era, while banking and insurance services have become easier, fraud in their name has also increased rapidly. Often such news comes to light when someone has committed fraud by posing as a fake insurance company. To eliminate this problem from its roots, TRAI has issued instructions to make 1600 number series mandatory.
What is the new rule of TRAI?
As per TRAI’s latest instructions, all insurance companies regulated by the Insurance Regulatory and Development Authority of India (IRDAI) will now have to use only numbers starting with ‘1600’ to make service and transaction related calls to customers. The last date for insurance companies to adopt this new system has been fixed as 15 February 2026. Its main objective is to clarify the difference between real and fake calls so that consumers do not fall into any kind of trap.
How will the general public get relief?
Till now, insurance companies also used to call from simple 10-digit numbers, due to which it was difficult to identify whether the call really came from the company or was made by a fraudster. Now as soon as you see a number starting with 1600 on your phone, you will understand that it is a verified one.
TRAI has clarified that the 1600 series will be used only for services and transactions (like policy renewal reminder, claim status or premium payment alert). Only 140 series will still be used for promotional or marketing calls. This will free the customers from unnecessary calls.
