The accident took place on December 19, 2025 at around 2 am when the herd was crossing the railway tracks. Five coaches along with the train engine derailed. Eight elephants died on the spot, while many passengers were reportedly injured.
Many trains on this route have been canceled and some have been rerouted following the train accident. According to information received, the loco pilot stopped the train by applying emergency brakes on seeing the herd, but the train hit the elephants, leading to the accident. The area is wild and as a result herds of elephants occasionally come out of the forest and enter the railway tracks. According to locals, the elephants were a herd of eight, most of whom died.

Accident site and rescue operations
The train accident took place in the Lumding section of North East Frontier Railway. The accident site is about 126 km from Guwahati. Rescue and rescue operations are underway at the spot with the help of rescue teams and railway officials. Due to the derailment and carcasses of elephants on the tracks, train services to Upper Assam and other parts of the Northeast have been temporarily suspended. It is reported that the trains passing through this section are being diverted to the UP line.

After reaching Guwahati, additional coaches will be added for the convenience of passengers. The train will then continue its journey.

Repair work is underway on railway tracks in Assam. Railway officials said that the passengers in the affected coaches have been temporarily accommodated in other coaches where vacant seats are available. After isolating the affected coaches, the train left for Guwahati. After reaching Guwahati, additional coaches will be added to accommodate the passengers in the affected coaches and then the train will resume its journey.
