Trick of telecom companies or flaw in the system? Raghav Chadha raised a big issue in Parliament
Raising an important issue related to mobile data plans in Rajya Sabha, Raghav Chadha said that crores of consumers of the country are unknowingly facing financial losses every day. His allegation was that the current system of telecom companies does not do justice to the rights of the users. Even before this, he had raised questions in the Parliament regarding the stoppage of incoming calls when the recharge is over and the plans for 28 days.
Problem of ‘daily data limit’
This time he especially kept the problem of ‘daily data limit’ prominent. He told that when a consumer buys a mobile plan, he gets a fixed amount of data like 1.5 GB, 2 GB or 3 GB per day. But this data expires every day at midnight. If the subscriber is unable to use the entire data that day, the remaining portion gets exhausted and is not reserved for the next day.
Describing this system as against consumer interests, he gave a simple example. He said that if a person buys 20 liters of petrol and uses only 15 liters of it, the remaining 5 liters of petrol is not taken back as it has already been paid for. Similarly, mobile data should also be the property of the consumer and should not be allowed to go waste.
Accusations against telecom companies
He also alleged that telecom companies deliberately promote such plans in which daily data limit is fixed. In comparison, options with monthly data limit are made available less, because in them users can use the data as per their convenience, which can reduce the profits of the companies.
Telecom companies offer Recharge Plans with ‘𝐃🌸𝐢𝐥𝐲 𝐃🌸𝐭🌸 𝐋𝐢𝐦𝐢𝐭𝐬’ like 1.5GB, 2GB or 3GB per day, resetting every 24 hours. Any Unused Data EXPIRES at midnight, despite being fully paid for.

In his speech, he described the Internet as a basic need of today’s time and called it ‘digital oxygen’. He said that the role of Internet has become very important in almost every field like education, employment, banking and communication. In such a situation, wasting a large amount of data every day is a matter of serious concern.
Three suggestions given for solution
To solve this problem he gave three major suggestions. First, consumers should get the facility of data carry forward, so that the remaining data can be used the next day. Second, the option to adjust the price of remaining data at the end of the month in the next recharge should be given. Third, unused data should be considered a digital asset and allowed to be transferred to others. He demanded the government to take concrete steps in this direction, so that consumers can get their rights.
