Trump Says He Takes More Aspirin Than Recommended, Calls Himself ‘In Perfect Health’
In a candid health-focused interview with The Wall Street JournalPresident Donald Trump claimed he’s in “perfect” health — despite admitting to several unconventional health habits, including taking a higher-than-recommended daily dose of aspirin and skipping regular exercise.
At 79, Trump is the oldest president to be inaugurated in U.S. history. As public scrutiny around his physical and cognitive fitness grows, he addressed concerns head-on. In what the Journal described as an “impromptu phone call,” Trump dismissed recent speculation about his energy levels and denied he had fallen asleep at public events. He attributed photos of him appearing to nap to unfortunate moments when he was “blinking.”
The president revealed he has been taking a daily 325mg dose of aspirin — significantly higher than the commonly recommended 81mg low-dose version — for the past 25 years. He believes it helps “thin out the blood” and protect against heart complications, though he acknowledged it leads to visible bruising on his hands.
“They’d rather have me take the smaller one,” he said of doctors, “but I’m a little superstitious.”
According to the Mayo Clinic, aspirin therapy may help reduce the risk of heart attacks and strokes, but the chance of dangerous bleeding increases with age and higher dosages. The recommended dose typically ranges between 75mg and 325mg per day, depending on an individual’s health risks.
Trump’s hands have drawn attention recently due to visible bruises in photos. He addressed the speculation, explaining he now uses makeup to cover up the marks.
“I have makeup that’s easy to put on, takes about 10 seconds,” he said.
In October, Trump said he had an MRI but later corrected that, clarifying that he had undergone a CT scan at Walter Reed Medical Center. Navy Capt. Sean Barbabella, one of his physicians, confirmed that the scan was conducted “to definitively rule out any cardiovascular issues” and came back normal.
Trump’s physician also noted that the president has been diagnosed with chronic venous insufficiency, a common condition among older adults that causes swelling in the legs. He was advised to wear compression socks but chose not to. “I didn’t like them,” he said, adding that he now gets up from his desk more often to manage the swelling.
When asked about exercise, Trump doubled down on his long-held stance: he’s not a fan. “I just don’t like it. It’s boring,” he said. “To walk on a treadmill or run for hours and hours like some people do — that’s not for me.” The only form of activity he endorses? Golf.
As for his hearing, the president rejected rumors that he’s experiencing decline. “I don’t have hearing issues,” he insisted.
Despite all the criticism and rumors, his doctor gave him a clean bill of health, stating Trump remains in “exceptional health and perfectly suited to execute his duties as Commander in Chief.”
The renewed focus on Trump’s health comes after his 2024 opponent, President Joe Biden, withdrew from the election following a debate performance that raised concerns over his cognitive sharpness and age-related decline.
