Trump calls Supreme Court tariff ruling “very unfortunate” during State of the Union, says tariffs could replace income tax
United States President Donald Trump described the Supreme Court’s recent decision overturning several of his tariff measures as “very unfortunate” while delivering his annual State of the Union address to Congress.
Four Supreme Court Justices — Amy Coney Barrett, Elena Kagan, Chief Justice John Roberts and Brett Kavanaugh — were present in the audience as Trump made his remarks.
Last week, the Supreme Court ruled that parts of Trump’s sweeping tariff program exceeded presidential authority under the economic emergency law invoked to justify the measures. The decision struck down multiple elevated import duties introduced under his administration.
During his address, Trump defended his trade policy and reiterated his belief that tariffs could “substantially replace the modern-day system of income tax” and take a “great financial burden off the people that I love.” He maintained that tariff revenue could serve as a major fiscal tool while supporting domestic industry.
Summary of the address
US President Donald Trump is delivering his annual State of the Union address to Congress, with live coverage available across major networks.
In his speech, Trump highlighted his economic agenda, saying he has overseen a “turnaround for the ages” during his first year back in the White House.
However, recent polls suggest Americans are growing more skeptical of his policies. With midterm elections approaching in November, Trump is expected to use the address to rally supporters and persuade undecided voters to back his agenda.
All of Trump’s children were in attendance, alongside First Lady Melania Trump and four Supreme Court justices.
During the speech, Trump also announced plans to award the Presidential Medal of Freedom to the US men’s hockey team’s goaltender after their Olympic gold medal victory.
Shortly before Trump began speaking, Texas Democratic Congressman Al Green — who was protesting against the president — was escorted out of the chamber.
