Trump gave another surprise, America officially left WHO
Since US President Donald Trump became president again, America has taken many surprising decisions. Now taking another big step in this regard, America has officially completed the process of separation from the World Health Organization (WHO). America had described this step as an important objective of Trump’s second term.
The US Health and State Department have issued an official statement saying that America is no longer a member of WHO. After this decision, America even removed its flag from the WHO headquarters in Geneva. The Trump government clearly said that in future America will work with WHO on a very limited level.
Trump had given the order a year ago
Last year, Trump started the process of exiting the WHO by issuing an executive order on the very first day of his second term. After this, the US also refused to pay the outstanding $260 million (approximately Rs 2380 crore) to WHO.
A senior US Health Department official said that at present the US will not participate in WHO even as an observer, and there will be no re-participation in the future. The US has decided that it will work with other countries instead of WHO to monitor diseases and other public health priorities.
WHO does not have much option
America’s notice to withdraw from WHO was given a year ago, and now all the outstanding fees have not even been paid. According to legal experts, the chances of America paying the dues are extremely slim. Due to this decision, the options available to WHO have also been limited.
America stopped all its government funding from WHO
The US Department of Health and Human Services has also announced that the US has ceased all its government funding to WHO. Also, all American employees and contractors deployed in WHO have been recalled. Additionally, the US has also ended its official participation in WHO sponsor committees, governance bodies, and technical working groups.
