Trump’s announcement on social media

He wrote that I am proud to say that from the Oval Office I have signed a 10% global tariff on all countries, which will go into effect almost immediately. Earlier in a press conference, Trump had clarified that he is giving this order under Section 122 of the Trade Act of 1974, which will be in addition to the existing tariff. He also warned that if necessary, he can increase these rates further.

Supreme Court’s decision and Trump’s displeasure

Let us tell you that the US Supreme Court, in a 6-3 majority decision, had rejected the President’s authority, under which he used the ‘International Emergency Economic Powers Act’ of 1977; (IEEPA) without congressional approval. Trump called this court decision ‘extremely disappointing’ Told and said that he was ashamed of some members of the court. He taunted that he can destroy trade or impose restrictions but cannot impose tariffs, this is ridiculous.

New tariff will be effective for 150 days

This new tariff imposed under Section 122 of the Trade Act will currently be effective for approximately five months (150 days). During this time, the Trump Administration will conduct the necessary investigations to determine appropriate tariff rates on other countries. The Trump administration has indicated that they may also impose new tariffs under Section 232 (national security) and Section 301 (unfair trade practices). According to US Trade Representative Jamieson Greer, details of these legal actions will be released in the coming days.

Crisis on refund of billions of dollars

This decision of the Supreme Court has created uncertainty over the tariff revenue of approximately $175 billion collected last year, as this amount may now come under the ambit of refund. When Trump was asked about this refund, he said that this matter may remain in litigation for the next two years. At the same time, Treasury Secretary Scott Besant has expressed confidence that tariff revenues will remain almost unchanged in 2026 due to the new legal measures.
