No date received, no hearing held, US Supreme Court has not given any decision regarding Trump Tariff; Know why?
US Supreme Court on Trump Tariff: An important legal battle regarding US trade policy is still not resolved. The US Supreme Court on Wednesday did not rule on the legality of reciprocal tariffs imposed by President Donald Trump’s administration. The court has postponed its decision for the second time, due to which the government, industry and international business partners are eagerly waiting for the outcome. The US Supreme Court was expected to issue its opinion today on the tariffs imposed by the Trump administration under the International Emergency Economic Powers Act (IEEPA).
At present, no date has been fixed for any future decision. Internationally, the decision could reshape US trade policy, including imposing tariffs on major trading partners and disrupting global trade. Additionally, domestically it will also determine how far the President’s emergency powers can extend into the economy.
When did Trump announce the tariff? (When did Trump announce the tariffs?)
The court’s opinion focuses on the “reciprocating tariffs” framework, which President Donald Trump announced in April 2025. Under this, Washington introduced a baseline tariff of 10 percent on imports from most countries, this measure was scheduled to start from April 5. The administration also introduced a second layer of higher reciprocity rates for a group of countries it said had the most “non-reciprocated” trade barriers, with those country-specific rates increasing by about 50 percent depending on the group listed and set to take effect April 9.
US tariffs on Indian goods total 50 per cent, which includes a 25 per cent reciprocal tariff announced on April 2 and an additional 25 per cent secondary tariff linked to India’s continued oil trade with Russia.

When will the next hearing be held? (When will the next hearing be?)
Earlier, on January 9, the Supreme Court had also reserved its decision in this matter. The court has not given any clear indication as to when the next hearing will be held or when the verdict will be pronounced. On Wednesday, the court gave verdicts in three other cases, but neither there was any debate nor any deadline was set in this sensitive matter related to tariff.
The hearing will focus on the scope of the president’s powers.
The case revolves around the question of whether President Trump has exceeded his constitutional and legal powers by unilaterally imposing 10 to 50 percent tariffs on almost all of America’s major trading partners. The Trump administration used the International Emergency Economic Powers Act of 1977 (IEEPA), which declared the growing US trade deficit and trafficking in illicit drugs such as fentanyl a national emergency, to impose these tariffs.
12 states have challenged Trump’s tariffs
On the other hand, this argument has been challenged in petitions filed by 12 Democrat-ruled US states and businesses. The petitioners argue that the IEEPA law is meant to deal with extraordinary emergencies, and not to implement a comprehensive and long-term trade policy. He claims that the constitutional authority to set tariffs rests primarily with the US Congress, not the President.
