Trump’s tariff threat: Indications of increased duty on Indian rice imports, know what will be the effect

US President Donald Trump has warned that he may impose new tariffs on agricultural imports. Especially on the import of rice from India. Trump made this comment during a meeting at the White House, where he announced a billion-dollar agricultural relief package for American farmers and sharply criticized agricultural imports from India and some other Asian countries.

After this statement of US President Donald Trump, the sword of additional tariff has once again hung on Indian exporters. From September 2025, 50% reciprocal tariff is applicable on rice exported from India to America. Due to this, the export of rice from India has decreased by about 50% on average.

‘Vietnam and Thailand also mentioned’

In his first reaction, Ajay Bhalotia, General Secretary of All India Rice Exporters Association, told a news channel, ‘In his statement, President Trump has mentioned India as well as Vietnam and Thailand, which makes it clear that Trump is referring to non-Basmati rice. Because Vietnam and Thailand export only non-Basmati rice to America. It is not yet clear whether the additional tariff will be imposed on non-Basmati rice or on Basmati rice also. The export of Basmati rice to America is about five times more than that of non-Basmati rice. Now it remains to be seen what President Trump decides next.

According to All India Rice Exporters Association,

– Yesterday, 2.5 lakh metric tons of Basmati rice was exported from India to America in the financial year 2024-2025.
– Export of non-Basmati rice was 0.6 lakh metric tonnes.
– Its price in the international market is 350 million dollars, i.e. about Rs 3150 crore.

The latest statement will have so much impact

Now after Trump’s latest statement, there is a possibility of slowing down the rice export trade worth Rs 3150 crore from India. The export trade of Basmati rice from India to America was growing at the rate of 20% annually, which has already slowed down due to the reciprocal tariff imposed in August.

India’s exports will be adversely affected

Now Trump’s latest statement is likely to have further impact on rice exports from India to America. If Trump decides to impose new tariffs in the coming days, it will have a negative impact on rice exports from India.
