Ingredients required to make black lentils or whole lentils

one cup black lentils
a finely chopped onion
a finely chopped tomato
One or two green chillies finely chopped
half teaspoon red chilli powder
half teaspoon turmeric powder
one spoon mango powder
salt as per taste
half teaspoon garam masala
two to three spoons of oil
half teaspoon cumin
a pinch of asafoetida

First of all, clean the black lentils or whole lentils thoroughly, so that there are no pebbles or anything else in it. Then wash it and keep it to soak for an hour. Now keep the cooker on gas. Add two to three spoons of oil in it. Now add cumin and asafoetida in it.

Then add chopped onion and fry. Then add tomatoes, green chillies and fry for a while. After this, add salt along with turmeric powder and red chilli powder and cook for a minute. Be careful to add a little water so that the masala does not burn. Then add the remaining spices and fry the masala until it leaves oil.

Now add whole or black lentils into it. Fry for one to two minutes. Then add water and whistle. Let it whistle for two to three whistles. Then check if the dal is cooked well and then turn off the gas. If the dal seems too thick then add hot water to it and cook it.

The dal will become thin. Your spicy lentil dal is ready. Serve hot dal with roti and rice. Keep in mind that add mango powder only at the end after cooking the dal. Otherwise the dal will not cook properly.
