Trying to sail the stormy Bay of Bengal, two boats sank on the coast of Myanmar, the death of 500 Rohingya refugees!
Terrible shipwreck on the coast of Myanmar. At least 500 people died when two boats carrying Rohingya refugees capsized in the Bay of Bengal. The UN refugee agency UNHCR and the International Organization for Migration (IOM) said the dead included women and children. The perilous attempt to navigate the rough seas in search of safe haven has led to danger.
Both boats set sail in late June, the UN refugee agency and the International Organization for Migration said. One departs from the Rakhine State of Myanmar and the other from the refugee camp area of Cox’s Bazar, Bangladesh. Passengers were trying to escape by sea in search of safe haven. The number of casualties has not yet been officially announced. However, the United Nations has expressed deep concern over the large number of casualties. It is believed to be one of the worst maritime accidents involving Rohingya in recent years.
It is known that there were approximately 250 passengers on a boat. It sank shortly after setting sail. The other boat is believed to have sunk off Myanmar’s Ayeyarwady coast on July 8. It had approximately 280 passengers. The number of dead and missing is yet to be confirmed. The United Nations fears the death toll may rise.
Incidentally, the Rohingya, who have been persecuted in Myanmar for a long time, make the perilous voyage in small wooden boats in the hope of reaching Malaysia, Indonesia and Thailand in search of safety and livelihood. Violence in Myanmar and harsh conditions in Bangladesh’s overcrowded refugee camps force them to take such risks. According to the United Nations, approximately 900 Rohingya have died in 2025 while fleeing by sea.
