Two contractors arrested in Mumbai’s Mithi River scam, corruption worth Rs 65 crore

Mumbai, 11 December. Mumbai Police has arrested two more people in the case of corruption worth Rs 65 crore in removing silt from Mithi river of Mumbai. This arrest is related to corruption in the cleaning of Mithi river of Mumbai. According to information given by Mumbai Police, the two arrested people are contractors and have been identified as Sunil Upadhyay (54) and Mahesh Purohit (48).

According to the police, both the contractors had obtained the work contracts through fake memoranda of understanding (MOU). Both were produced in the Esplanade Court, which sent them to police custody till December 16. A total of 5 accused have been arrested so far in this case. It is alleged that the contractors also made fake bills for taking the silt from Mithi River out of Mumbai and the Municipal Corporation officials approved them.

According to the police, the two arrested contractors are accused of preparing fake MoUs for the dumping ground in collaboration with BMC officials, middlemen and others between 2013 and 2023. The arrested Sunil Upadhyay is a director in SNB Infrastructure and Mahesh Purohit is a partner in the firm of MB Brothers. Cleaning of Mithi River in Mumbai is done every year before the monsoon season. It is an important river. This river takes on a frightening appearance during the rainy season. Actually, this river flows through the middle of the city and is covered with garbage. In such a situation, compromises are made regarding its cleanliness.

In August this year, the Enforcement Directorate had frozen assets worth more than Rs 47 crore after a raid in Mumbai in connection with the Mithi river desilting scam. The search operation was then conducted by the ED’s Mumbai zonal office on July 31 and eight locations linked to BMC contractors and a civic engineer were raided. Under this operation, more than Rs 47 crore kept in various bank accounts, fixed deposits and demat accounts were frozen.
