Two days before the elections, Bangladesh provided assistance of Rs 29 lakh to the family of Dipu Das.

The interim government of Bangladesh has announced financial help and home support for the family of Dipu Chandra Das. Dipu Chandra Das was a Hindu textile worker who was brutally murdered in a mob lynching at Square Masterbari in Bhaluka upazila of Mymensingh district on December 18, 2025.

Das (27), who was charged with blasphemy for allegedly saying bad things about Islam at a factory event, was beaten, tied to a tree and set on fire by a mob of 140-150 people. The incident, which was part of alleged communal violence, was widely condemned.

Under the package, Tk 25 lakh (~₹29 lakh) has been provided through the National Housing Authority to construct a permanent house, which will be supervised by the Upazila Nirbahi Officer of Tarkanda. The extra help includes Tk 10 lakh cash each to Das’s father and wife and a fixed deposit of Tk 5 lakh to secure their child’s future.

Education advisor Dr CR Abrar said the murder was a “brutal crime without any reason” and a “national shame” fueled by communal hysteria. “This help cannot compensate for the loss of a human being,” he said, but reiterated the state’s promise for justice and rehabilitation, as Das was the sole breadwinner of the family.

He stressed the protection of rights of all religions and castes in Bangladesh, and said that no one can take the law into their own hands amid differences of opinion. Twelve people have been arrested; The investigation is ongoing to hold all those responsible accountable. The announcement comes two days before the general elections scheduled for February 12, 2026 (the campaign will end on February 10), which comes amid ongoing political transitions following the unrest of 2024.
