Britain's Foreign Minister Lammy urges China not to support Russia's military

Britain's foreign minister on Friday expressed concern over China's support for Russia in its war against Ukraine and urged his Chinese counterpart to stop his country's companies from supplying equipment to the Russian military.

Britain's Foreign Minister David Lammy had a meeting with China's Foreign Minister Wang Yi in Beijing on Friday. David Lammy is the first cabinet minister to visit China since the Labor Party came to power in Britain in July. He met China's Vice Premier Ding Xiuxiang on Friday and also spoke to Foreign Minister Wang Yi later the same day.

Britain's Foreign Minister is on a two-day visit to China as part of efforts to improve relations with Beijing. In fact, relations between the two countries have soured over allegations of espionage, supporting Russia in the war against Ukraine and repression of the freedom of ordinary citizens in Hong Kong.

The British government stressed that ties with China are “pragmatic and necessary,” officials said. He said Lammy raised complex issues, including human rights concerns in Hong Kong and China's far-western Xinjiang province, and Russia.

According to a statement issued by the Foreign Ministry after the meeting, “Lammy said that Britain and China have a common interest in European peace and the end of war.” He confirmed that China's supply of equipment to Russia to help in the war against Ukraine could affect China's relations with European countries.

Lamy urged Wang to “take all measures to stop Chinese companies from supplying the Russian military and investigate,” the statement said. It was reported that the foreign ministers of both the countries agreed to continue discussions on other geopolitical issues like the Russia issue and the conflict in West Asia.
