MUMBAI – The Board of Control for Cricket in India (BCCI) on Friday assured the Bombay High Court that the dues of Mumbai, Pimpri Chinchwad and Navi Mumbai police for the security cover provided during the match will be paid within two weeks.
According to the Cricket Board, Pimpri Chinchwad Police has collected Rs. 1.70 crore, Navi Mumbai Rs. 3.0 crore and Mumbai Police Rs. 1.03 crore outstanding. In the affidavit filed in response to the petition, BCCI has assured to repay this amount within two weeks.
RTI activist Anil Galgali filed a PIL challenging the state government’s decision to reduce police security charges at cricket matches since 2011. BCCI filed an affidavit demanding rejection of the application. The court has fixed the hearing on February 11.
The government said in an affidavit filed in November that the decision was taken keeping in mind the financial benefits to the state government in Maharashtra. The security charges in other states were claimed to be lower.
The court wondered how the state government could compare a match held in Mumbai with a match held in cities like Kanpur or Lucknow. Is the security cost of a match in Mumbai the same as a match in Lucknow? What is the explanation for this? The chief said, something is wrong. Upadhyay asked the question.
