Uluberia Lok Sabha: Gate of Howrah, citadel of musical instruments and fort of TMC
Uluberia Lok Sabha constituency, situated in Howrah district of West Bengal, is the main gateway to the twin city of Kolkata. Formed in 1952, the seat comprises seven assembly constituencies—Uluberia East, North (SC), South, Shyampur, Bagnan, Amta and Udaynarayanpur. According to the 2011 census, it has a population of 20.52 lakh, of which 69.55 percent are urban residents. The share of SC is 19.63 percent. In 2017, there were 15.41 lakh voters registered, whose main language is Bengali.
The history of this area goes back 500 years, dating back to the Bhurshut Empire. A Venetian traveler mentioned Bator in 1578. During the British period, the East India Company established settlements. Uluberia-II block (72.21 sq km) has jute mills, small scale industries and 30 per cent agriculture dependent population. Literacy is 78.05 percent.
The pride of Uluberia is its musical instrument clusters – sitar, sarod, tanpura are made in Dhulasimla, Rangmahal etc. This center developed after independence is of nationwide fame.
In politics, initially from Congress to Forward Bloc (1957), then to the dominance of CPM (Hannan Mollah 1980-2004). TMC’s Sultan Ahmed’s victory in 2009, then Sajda Ahmed’s victory in 2017, 2019 (6.95 lakh votes) and 2024 (7.25 lakh, 52%). BJP stood second.
TMC is strong in preparation for 2026 assembly elections, but BJP is challenging. TMC’s statewide agitation on controversy over SIR hearing and allegations against central agencies. The cultural-economic heritage of Uluberia will make the election battle interesting.
