Umar Khalid gets 14 days interim bail to attend sister’s wedding
The court on Thursday provided limited relief to social activist Umar Khalid, accused in a major conspiracy case related to Delhi riots. As per the latest order of the court, he will get interim bail for a total of 14 days from December 16 to December 29, so that he can attend his sister’s wedding, which is being organised.
It is scheduled to take place on December 27th.
Khalid gets bail on humanitarian grounds
This decision was given by Additional Sessions Judge Sameer Bajpai of Karkardooma Court after completing the hearing. In the petition presented in the court, it was argued on behalf of Khalid that marriage is a very important occasion for the family and his presence is mandatory. After hearing the arguments of both the parties, the court ordered the release of Khalid for a stipulated period on humanitarian grounds. However, the court also clarified that this relief is only temporary and he will have to return to judicial custody once the bail period ends.
A charge sheet has been filed against Umar Khalid under the provisions of Unlawful Activities (Prevention) Act – UAPA under the provisions of Unlawful Activities (Prevention) Act – UAPA under the charges of widespread conspiracy, inciting violence and other serious charges related to Delhi riots. This case is still going through the judicial process and the prosecution has made serious allegations against Khalid and many other accused. The hearing of this multi-layered case has been going on in the court for a long time.
Demand for bail several times before
It is noteworthy that this is not the first time that Umar Khalid has sought interim relief. Before this permission was given by the court, he had approached both the Delhi High Court and the lower court for regular bail, but he did not get relief from both the places. The courts had earlier rejected his bail plea saying that the allegations against him were of serious nature and could impact the course of investigation and trial.
