UN expressed concern over the ongoing violence in Bangladesh, said- there is a need to make minorities feel safe

United Nations, 23 December. United Nations Secretary General Antonio Guterres has expressed deep concern over the violence taking place in Bangladesh. His spokesman Stephane Dujarric said that all people living in Bangladesh, especially minorities, should feel safe. “All Bangladeshis need to feel safe. We are deeply concerned about the violence seen in Bangladesh,” the spokesperson said when asked about violence against minorities in Bangladesh and the recent lynching of Hindus.

He clearly said that whether it is Bangladesh or any other country, those who are not part of the majority society should also get complete security. Expressing confidence in the Mohammad Yunus-led government in Bangladesh, he said that the government will do its best to ensure the safety of every citizen. Violence against minorities has increased in Bangladesh since the death of Sharif Usman Hadi, a youth leader associated with Inquilab Manch.

It is reported that he died after an attack earlier this month. The incidents of violence, which started after the fall of Prime Minister Sheikh Hasina’s government in August last year, have become serious again in the recent two weeks. In recent times, many Hindus who had nothing to do with politics were also targeted by the mob. They were targeted only because of their religion. New incidents of violence have raised international concern.

Last week, United Nations High Commissioner for Human Rights Volker Turk appealed to maintain peace and stop the violence. He had said that revenge and retribution would create deeper cracks in the society and harm the rights of all. Regarding the elections to be held in February, he said that it is necessary to have such an environment in which every person can participate in public life without fear and peacefully.

Meanwhile, two members of the House of Representatives in the US capital Washington strongly condemned the violence against Hindus and the media. Raja Krishnamurthy expressed deep grief over the mob killing of Hindu youth Dipu Chandra Das in Bangladesh, calling it a dangerous incident in the times of instability and unrest. Suhas Subramaniam also expressed concern over the incident and said that after the recent change in the government, reports of attacks on Hindu and other minority communities have increased, including targeting of houses and temples.
